FORT BRAGG, N.C., April 29 (UPI) — The U.S. military has promised action to repair barracks at Fort Bragg, N.C., after images of the living conditions at the post were posted on YouTube.
After posting on the Internet the images that showed the building in disrepair and filled with mold and rust, Ed Frawley said he was contacted by U.S. Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Dick Cody, CNN reported.
“This is embarrassing. It’s disgusting. It makes me mad as hell,” Frawley said of the building where his son, Sgt. Jeff Frawley, lived upon his return from a 15-month deployment to Afghanistan. The 10-minute video shows pictures from throughout the building, including what Frawley identified as chipping lead paint, missing ceiling tiles and raw sewage leaking into the building.
Frawley told CNN that Cody told him “there’s no excuse” for the conditions.
“The conditions depicted in Mr. Frawley’s video are appalling and unacceptable, and we are addressing the concerns he expressed,” said U.S. Army Maj. Tom Earnhardt, spokesman for the 82nd Airborne, in a written statement.
Base officials invited media representatives to tour barracks and acknowledged serious problems exist. Earnhardt said Fort Bragg has a massive construction project under way to create housing but is behind schedule.
I am counting down the days until the end of the Bush Administration. I am in shock and outraged that ANY of our military personell would be expected to live in conditions like this. I am ashamed. I was suprised to see this video of the living conditions of the 82nd Airborne, considering the outcry of the conditions of Walter Reed. The image of the seasoned soldier trying to unplug a floor drain while standig in a latrine sink, surrounded by shit and piss is horrible. They deserve better. Why is the base commander of Fort Bragg not being held accountable? What do the soldiers that occupy the base while others are deployed do? What are their living conditions? ~Bethany
